Cimafunk Brings the Funk to Discovery Green

Cimafunk Brings the Funk to Discovery Green

When I visited Cuba in 2016, I fell in love with the people, the food, the art, and especially the music.

That trip deepened my appreciation for Buena Vista Social Club, Chucho Valdés, and Celia Cruz.

So when Cimafunk took the stage at Jazzy Sundays in the Parks at Discovery Green, I came expecting a connection to Cuba. What I got was a performance that reframed the way I think about Cuban music and its place in the larger Black musical world.

Trudy Lynn at the Lyons Avenue Renaissance Festival

I was excited to see Trudy Lynn at the Lyons Avenue Renaissance Festival. The festival celebrates the history, culture, and spirit of Fifth Ward, and this year marked the neighborhood’s 160th anniversary. It was the perfect stage for an artist with deep roots there.

Cimafunk’s Tiny Desk performance captured the band’s explosive blend of Afro-Cuban dance music and 1970s American funk and soul. The group fused Cuban vocal improvisation, guajira, bolero, and deep groove into a singular, high-energy sound, turning the set into an irresistible dance party.
