I've never understood why we feel the need to turn art into a competition.
The MTV Video Music Awards recently returned to Los Angeles, and the Soul Train Awards are back after a hiatus.
I'm sure plenty of music fans are excited, but I'm not particularly interested.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoy seeing great performances, discovering new artists, and watching musicians receive recognition for their work. But I've always questioned the idea of declaring one song, album, or artist better than another.
A song that moves me to tears might do absolutely nothing for you. An album I consider a masterpiece might be one you can't stand. Neither of us is wrong.
So what exactly makes something the Best Song or Best Album of the Year? Sales? Streaming numbers? Popularity? The opinions of a handful of industry insiders? And why should any of those things determine the value of someone's art?
I understand that awards generate publicity and can help artists build their careers. But I wonder if we've placed too much importance on trophies and not enough on the music itself.
I'd rather celebrate great music without ranking it.
What do you think? Do music awards still serve a purpose, or have we turned artistic expression into another popularity contest?

Tribute to Freddie Jackson
Freddie Jackson helped shape my understanding of love long before I knew what being in love actually meant.
As a teenager, I spent countless nights listening to The Quiet Storm, a radio show dedicated to R&B love songs. I'd sit beside my radio with a cassette recorder, waiting for my favorite songs to play. Freddie Jackson was one of the artists I always hoped to hear.
I loved “You Are My Lady,” “Rock Me Tonight,” and “Have You Ever Loved Somebody.” Although I knew the words, I didn't fully understand the emotions behind them. Still, something about Freddie's voice connected with me. He made romance sound wonderful, and I wanted to experience it for myself.
Now, after experiencing love, marriage, and heartbreak, I listen to those songs with a different understanding. They remind me of the young man I was and everything I've experienced since.
Freddie's music has been with me through different stages of my life. I'll always appreciate that.
Rest well, Freddie. Thank you for helping a young man believe in love.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the chance to meet several Houston artists who are doing some amazing things. It’s encouraging to see so much creativity thriving across our city, especially from independent artists who continue to make music and create their own opportunities. But great music needs listeners. If you discover a Houston artist you like, support them. Go to their shows. Stream their music. Follow them on social media. Share a song with a friend. Those small actions can make a...
Newsletter Sponsored by Perfumania What Dolly Parton Meant to Us Dolly Parton understood the absurdity of being Dolly Parton. She once entered a Dolly Parton look-alike contest and lost. I love that she was always in on the joke. That was part of her genius. But it isn’t why I’m writing about her. What strikes me is how completely Black people claimed her. She had a permanent invitation to the cookout because her connection to us never felt calculated. Read Article Mocha Man Music Moment...
